My favorite band of all time are the mighty METALLICA.For nearly 20 years they have carved a unique niche in progressive and thrash music. From there early recordings (no life till leather demo) they set alight a much jaded music scene. With searing guitars and screaming vocals, they stood out with outrageous lyrics (whiplash) and sublime instrumentals (pulling teeth-anesthesia).
After a heady start with 3 very powerful albums containing many classic tracks (seek and destroy - kill em all, Fade to black - Ride the lightning, Orion - master of puppets) and very early line up changes, *these were all prior to official recordings mentioned btw,Dave mustaine (now in Megadeth) left, and ron mcgovney (bass) also left. Dave mustaine left because he was (an still is) an arse hole, and a drunken arse hole!Metallica were devastated in 1986 when there zany bass player, Cliff Burton died in a tour buss that crash, god I still miss cliff so much.... Cliff really was (as mustaine once said) "the major rager on the 4 string mother fucker!!!).
Cliff Burton RIP BUDDY. Born: February 10th, 1962
Died: September 27th, 1986, Sweden outside Stockholm Born:
After cliffs death the band re-grouped with new bassist,
Jason Newsted, and released the "garage days re-revisited EP which featured
cover versions, this demonstrated jasons ability and unique plectrum style play,
as opposed to cliffs finger style bass playing.
What a shame then that after such a brilliant entry into
the world of METALLICA, the band forgot to turn on the microphones during the
recording of "AND JUSTICE FOR ALL"Where
is the bass???
A truly superb tracklist and very very good songs that have been ruined by the complete lack of bass guitar, although Blackened and Dyers eve are superb, im sure , if you listen hard enough you can hear some bass guitar.
METALLICA are still a band of incredible integrity, and even though it took me many years to get into there slower stuff since the "black" album, I respect them very much for there balls to the wall honesty.
However, they have recently come under fire
from all sides of the music world, fan and fellow artist alike, for there
(mainly Lars ulrich inspired) attack on the
file sharing community.
Now im all for opinion etc, but i felt that the NAPSTER technology was groundbreaking and was revolutionary for new and established artists. It would cut out the middle men, so to speak, and perhaps a business model could be achieved to generate cash for the artists in the first place.
For some reason, though, Lar$ took this far to personally, and launched tirade after tirade on the file sharing model and subsequently became ridiculed at TV awards and in the mainstream press, not to mention the number of anti-metallica sites that have sprung up since the napster debacle!!
I HAVE DOWNLOADED METALLICA SONGS THAT I HAD NOT PURCHASED, after which I purchased all there new albums and even splashed out on some wicked DVD'S (cunning stunts and s&m).One of my personal favorite METALLICA downloads on NAPSTER is "king nothing" on "Live with jools Holland" a UK TV show. Also I must say I was amazed to find a concert I went to in 1988, in Sheffield, UK.
THIS
FOR ME IS THE JOY OF NAPSTER, FINDING LIVE PERFORMANCES OF YOUR FAVORITE BAND
ON TV OR AT A CONCERT YOU ACTUALLY WENT TO 12 YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!!!
Following this the band progressed into many musical areas and have released 4 full albums and various DVD,VHS,CD compilations.
I particularly would advise that you run to your local music store, and buy the amazing S&M which, contrary to reports/opinions is amazing!!!You have not heard METALLICA until you have heard the (GRAMMY WINNING) "call of ktulu", played with the sanfransico symphony orchestra....a truly awe inspiring moment in modern music....love it!

What a sad day when cliff died...i myself was16 years old, and had got deeply into metallica.Orion and probably most of "puppets" meant so much to me growing up without a mother or father.....These guys really got me through life at that time, and then it happpened, the worlds greatest hippy motherfucker died.
"I just recall our tour manager Bobby
saying, 'Okay, let's get the band together and take them back to the
hotel.' The only thing I could think was, 'The band? No way! There
ain't no band. The band is not "the band" right now. It's
just three guys."
--- James Hetfield - 1993
Cliff Burton's memorial service was held October 7, 1986. His family and friends remembered him as a "world class local boy" with a love for Johann Sebastian Bach, Mexican food and his hometown. His parents said he was "an appreciative and thoughtful son. Because of his performing, he'd sleep all day and stay up all night and never wake us up. Once, a little boy came up to the door, early in the morning and wanted Cliff to sign his shirt. So Cliff staggered to the door and said 'Sure, of course I'll sign it.'" Connie, his sister, said, "I once called him up and said 'How do you like being a rock star?', and he was furious. He asked me never to refer to him that way again." At the conclusion of his memorial service "Orion" from the band's 'Master of Puppets' album, was played. The elaborate instrumental made a fitting tribute for the young bassist, since, as James Hetfield recalled, Burton was Metallica's most educated musician and "Orion" was largely his composition. Cliff's ashes were spread at various points around the bay area, including the Maxwell Ranch House area.
Cliff
was so completely honest to himself and the people around him. He hated
all this being-put-on-a-pedestal bullshit."

"He was a wild,
hippie-ish, acid-taking,
bell-bottom-wearing guy. He meant business, and you couldn't fuck around
with him. I wanted to get that respect that he had. We gave him shit about
his bell-bottoms everyday. He didn't care. "This is what I wear. Fuck
you." He loved music. He was really intellectual but very to the point.
He taught me a lot about attitude."
